Slick Woody's stock logo Adirondack chairComfort and durability. That’s what I’m looking for in a piece of furniture that will spend most of it’s life outside. Adirondack chairs are just that. And as long as you are willing to invest a little bit into one you’ll most likely have something that will last for years. These chairs are the kind of chairs that you become connected to quickly. It will be your favorite spot to sit and relax and think about what’s important to you. The cool thing is there are many manufacturers of Adirondack chairs and you decide which one is best for you.

Adirondack chairs come in many different styles and are made of many different materials. You can find these chairs made of practically every kind of workable material available. Of course, depending on the materials and the manufacturer, the price will vary. In this article I am going to explore the most common materials used, their benefits, and how they affect the cost of the chairs.

Wood Adirondack Chairs

There are so many different types of woods that are used in making Adirondack Chairs, it’s pretty crazy. I have found there are so many that if I wrote about every single one, not only would would bore you to death, but it would take me months just to write the article. I would, however, like to provide you a list of some of the different wood materials I have seen used to give you perspective of the wide varieties available.

Different Woods Used in Making Adirondack Chair

  • Pine      Slick Woody's adirondack chair wood pile
  • Mahogany
  • Cedar
  • White Oak
  • Ipe
  • Cypress
  • Redwood
  • Teak

The two most commonly used woods are Pine and Cedar. Let’s take a look at how these materials affect the cost of Adirondack Chairs.

If you’re in the market for Adirondack Chairs, there are so many options it’s almost unbearable. If you’re anything like me, you want to cut through all the noise and narrow your options to make your decision much easier. It’s kind of like when you go to a restaurant and the menu is 8 pages with 40 items on each page and it takes you forever to figure out what you want to order. But when you go to a restaurant that has a one page menu with 2 sides and 10 items on each side, your ordering process is much easier and delightful.

With that being said, let’s take a look at 3 comparable chairs by 3 different vendors through Amazon and see how their prices stack up. When searching for pine adirondack chairs on Amazon these are the first 3:

Weathercraft- Designer’s Choice Pine Adirondack Chair

    • Price  $149.98 + Free shipping
    • Dimensions: 33”x30.5”x36”
    • Assembly required
    • Treated Pine

Bear Chair- Pine Adirondack Chair Kit

    • Price  $94.62 + Free Shipping
    • Dimensions: 33”x36”x37”
    • Assembly required
    • Non treated Pine

South Shore- Cape Cod Adirondack Chair

    • Price  $115 + Free Shipping
    • Dimensions: 35”x28”x33”
    • Assembly required
    • Non treated Pine

Other than price, there’s not much difference to consider among these options. You would have to consider the dimensions, but the differences are basically negligible.

I feel the most important factor outside of price would be if the wood is treated or not. If you plan on leaving these chairs outside for long periods of time, I highly recommend treated pine. Let’s not forget that wood is a very porous material and will absorb moisture, which will ultimately wear it out.

Cedar Adirondack Chairs  Slick Woody's cedar wood adirondack chair

I know you’re probably asking yourself, “what are some of the similarities and differences between Pine and Cedar adirondack chairs?” Well, as for similarities, the construction and dimensions will be very similar. Also, if ordering online they both will require a bit of assembly due to the nature of their size and how they would be shipped. However, there are some differences in the actual materials themselves.

Differences between Cedar and Pine wood

    • Cedar will retain its natural look much longer than Pine
    • Treated Pine will last longer than Cedar, however Cedar will last much longer than untreated Pine
    • Cedar will not warp as easy as Pine

Let’s take a look at 3 top Cedar Adirondack chairs on Amazon and see how they compare to each other.

Shine Company Inc- Wesport adirondack Chair

    • Price  $77.95 + Free Shipping
    • Dimensions: 28”x35”x36”
    • Assembly required

Kilmer Creek- Folding Cedar Adirondack Chair

    • Price  $127.99 + $39.00 Shipping
    • Dimensions: 36”x31”x36”
    • Folds for storage
    • Assembly required

All Things Cedar- All Things Cedar Adirondack Chair

    • Price  $160.70 + Free Shipping
    • Dimensions: 32”x39”x38”
    • Assembly required

Just like the Pine chairs, there doesn’t seem to be much difference here. The price will fluctuate depending on the manufacturer. If I had to choose one here I would probably go with the folding chair because it will store a bit easier.

Composite Adirondack Chairs   Slick Woody's composite materials Adirondack Chair

Composite Adirondack Chairs are chairs made of synthetic wood materials. Generally, composite woods consist of wood fibers, plastic, and some kind of a binding agent. When these items are put together they form a product that is denser, stronger, and heavier than wood alone. This type of material is more scratch, stain, and mold resistant than regular lumber, which in turn will make it last longer.

All of these attributes are great… but they come with a price. Literally. If you want a composite Adirondack chair, expect to pay a bit more. Plus, some people really like the appearance of the natural wood look. You won’t get that exact look with these. Even though most composite wood manufacturers have molds that include a wood grain to them, they still have a sheen that lets you know they aren’t natural wood.
